Rodents and Your Home!

A Rodent infestation can occur in almost any environment from urbanized areas to the country where rodents thrive in their natural habitats. In suburban areas like Houston, rodents—especially rats and mice –cause property damage and  spread diseases that impact both your family’s health and finances.

Want to prevent these pests from invading your private space and making your house their home?

Here are a few things you can do:

Examine the Area Around the Foundation

Let’s start low around the foundation near the weep holes and other gaps which can become a gateway for rodents. The weep holes are vertical gaps between brick that allow both condensation moisture drain from and air to flow. NEVER plug weep holes to keep pests out of your home, but you can use wire mesh or steel wool to screen them out.

Investigate All Entry Points

When we say all entry points, we really do mean all of them. Rodents are sneaky creatures and can slither in through the narrowest and the most oddly shaped spaces, no matter where they may be located.

Start with the doors and the windows. Is there any gap between them? Do they close properly? Can a rodent push its way inside easily? If there’s a discrepancy, seal or replace the designated window or door properly to avoid rats from entering.

Next, check out your vents and crawl spaces. Secure these to ensure rodents don’t make their way inside your basement or attic. Additionally, if you have screens over your windows, make sure they are secure .

Don’t forget about the roof. Chimneys are a great place for rodents to sneak into your home, especially during the summer. Block the chimney if you don’t need to use it currently, or take measures to prevent rodents from crawling inside your kitchen or living area through it.  Likewise, if there are any breakages or gaps in the roofing itself, they should be filled in or replaced.

Avoid Cluttering Your Home

Marie Kondo is right: keeping your home tidy and clutter free does spark joy. And you know what else it does? It keeps rodents away!

Rodents are less likely to sneak in if you’re more mindful about cleanliness and tidiness. These pesky little creatures find shelter in untidy and cluttered spaces, and they can stay hidden there for weeks before you notice.

Make sure you’re clearing away all the junk from your storage spaces and backyard, and sealing your garbage bags properly to avoid inviting unwanted guests.
